The secret to strong teeth.
Fluoride is a natural mineral that helps build strong teeth and prevent cavities. It has been an essential part of dentistry for decades.
Fluoride benefits both children and adults. Studies have repeatably shown that the earlier children are exposed to fluoride, the less likely they are to develop cavities.
What happens during a professional fluoride treatment?
In accordance with the American Dental Association (ADA) guidelines, we will likely recommend a professional fluoride treatment every 3, 6, or 12 months, depending on your oral health. If you’re at high risk for cavities, we may also prescribe a special fluoride rinse or gel for you to use regularly at home.
If a fluoride treatment is recommended during your hygiene visit, your periodontal therapist will review the process with you. Typically this treatment takes less than 5 minutes and is completed after you cleaning is finished and your teeth are free of any debris. The fluoride gel is painted onto your teeth with a small brush – you may notice your teeth feeling gritty after. We recommend avoiding eating or drinking for 30 minutes after the treatment so the fluoride can fully absorb into your teeth. Any grittiness will easily be brushed off at night when you complete your routine home hygiene routine but rest assured, the benefits of the fluoride treatment are already fast at work!
