Dr. Shad was born in Stony Brook, New York, where she lived until age 8. She spent the rest of her childhood in Richmond, Virginia. Growing up, her family dentist made a powerful impact on her by how well he took care of her family. At any early age, she knew she wanted to be able to take care of others like he had with her family.
She attended the Virginia Commonwealth University, where she was a member of the Division I athletic volleyball team. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree with a double major in biology and chemistry. She then earned her Masters of Physiology on oral cancer research. Her research was part of a published paper in the Journal of Carcinogenesis: EPS8 upregulates FOXM1 expression, enhancing cell growth and motility. During her masters program, she worked as an assistant at a private dental practice. This ignited her love of working with patients and a passion for the clinical side of dentistry. She went on to receive her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 2014 from VCU. She also did a Mini Sleep Residency at UNC Chapel Hill. Full of energy and inspiration to help, she quickly moved on from dental school to working in a private practice for 4 years, where her passion for gaining patient’s trust and educating them on oral health flourished. Her specialty is general dentistry, with further training in dental sleep medicine and TMJ disorders.
She is a qualified sleep dentist with the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and is working toward her Diplomate status in dental sleep medicine with the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine. Dr. Shad puts emphasis on fostering a calm, anxiety-free environment with open communication, where her patient’s feel confident, educated, and proactive about their health. She is passionate about breaking the stereotypes that dentists are “mean” or “scary”, and her patients at Whole Dental will readily tell you she is none of those things. One of her favorite parts of her job is helping her dental sleep patients and hearing their amazing success stories. She has often been told the oral appliances she’s created helped save a marriage—and even a life.
A true lover of sleep herself, it brings her great joy seeing her patients able to sleep peacefully again. The results are clear when they come into her office rested, well, and happy. An avid animal lover thanks to her beloved Yorkie, Tank, she sometimes thinks she would have been a vet if she hadn’t become a dentist. When she isn’t working, Dr. Shad enjoys spending time with her husband, Justin, and their young son, Dean. She moved to Michigan when her husband took on the position of Director of Baseball Operations at the Jimmy John’s Field in Utica. They are an active family, and Dr. Shad enjoys volleyball, lifting, traveling, and exploring all Michigan has to offer.
